With three minutes or less to escape a home fire, the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), part of UL Research Institutes, understands the vital role smoke alarms play in providing early fire warnings that save lives. FSRI collaborates with UL Standards, industry experts, and public fire and life safety educators to provide messaging about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

FSRI has assembled a variety of materials safety educators can use to spread the word, including our Smoke Alarm Friendship Stories highlighting the importance of maintaining smoke alarms like a good friendship. Materials also highlight the reduction of nuisance alarms due to new performance requirements coming into effect for devices certified to the 8th edition of UL 217.
