One of the first things every firefighter learns about fire is the fire triangle. Fire needs fuel, heat, and oxygen to survive.

Fire growth is definitely related to the amount of fuel and heat available, but it is the amount of oxygen that makes the difference in how quickly the fire can release heat. Control the oxygen, and you have control of the fire.
