UL Research Institutes launches new Resource Library and hands-on training toolkits to support scalable, evidence-based training

October 28, 2025

The Resource Library centralizes 300+ free fire service training materials from ULRI’s Fire Safety Academy.

October 28, 2025 (Columbia, Maryland) — UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Academy announced today a new Resource Library and four hands-on training toolkits created to advance fire service training with free, adaptable, and evidence-based resources.

The Resource Library is a centralized hub on the FSA where the fire service can easily explore and download 300+ free training materials, including course materials, instructor guides, and more. Each resource also includes context about its educational purpose and guidance on how instructors can effectively integrate it into their training.

Housed within the Resource Library are four HOT toolkits created to bridge the gap between classroom theory and fireground application, providing both instructors and firefighters with practical, hands-on resources that reinforce fire dynamics and tactical decision-making. The first three toolkits offer progressive fire dynamics training, while the fourth focuses on efficient water application techniques. Each includes demo videos, instructor handouts, and lesson plans to help instructors deliver training.

Four toolkits are currently available for free download in the FSA Resource Library:

  1. Tabletop Investigations: Use simple items to demonstrate foundational fire dynamics concepts, such as how materials burn and how heat transfers through different fire scenarios.
  2. Class B Flow Path Prop: Visualize how fire behaves in compartments and reacts to firefighting interventions.
  3. Dollhouse Fire Behavior Prop: Illustrate how fire and smoke behave in realistic, small-scale scenarios.
  4. Hose Stream Mechanics: Teach essential fireground techniques for quickly and efficiently applying water to suppress fire and save lives.

Offering a progressive learning experience that builds fire science knowledge step by step, the toolkits are designed to complement classroom instruction while remaining intuitive and flexible enough to be adapted to meet the needs of any department or be used independently.

“We designed these toolkits to equip instructors with the tools and confidence they need to deliver meaningful, evidence-based training,” said Meghan Maloney, Education & Training Manager at UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute. “Whether you're building props yourself or using our videos, the goal is the same: to make fire dynamics tangible and actionable.”

The Fire Safety Academy’s training courses and resource materials are grounded in the rigorous research conducted by ULRI’s Fire Safety Research Institute. The Fire Safety Academy currently offers over 30 evidence-based courses on fire dynamics, firefighting tactics, and firefighter health. With more than 160,000 registered users from over 35% of U.S. fire departments and over 325,000 completed courses, the FSA successfully delivers FSRI's research-backed training to firefighters nationwide.

The new HOT toolkits are available for free in the new Fire Safety Academy Resource Library. The fire service is encouraged to explore the collection, download training materials, and integrate them into their programs to enhance fire service preparedness and safety.

Visit the Fire Safety Academy to explore the Resource Library and download the HOT toolkits today.
