FSRI Welcomes Summer 2021 Interns

Meet our new Summer Interns!

Bekah Schrader, Research Intern 

Bekah is a rising senior at the University of Maryland studying fire protection engineering. She is a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the RISE Leadership Academy, and is a NFPA Ambassador for the UMD Department of Fire Protection Engineering. During her studies, she helped work on a research project that examined decking assemblies and their response to wind-driven firebrand attacks. She has previously interned at FSRI and is Blue Card Incident Command certified.

Thomas DiPietro, Research Intern 

Thomas is a rising senior at Rowan University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a certificate of undergraduate studies in aerospace engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and captain of Rowan’s club ultimate frisbee team. Outside of school, Thomas is a volunteer firefighter with the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Company #1 located in Monroe Township, New Jersey.

Jacob De Frees, Research Intern 

Jacob is a rising junior at the University of Maryland pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He is a member of the Quality Enhancement Systems and Teams (QUEST) honors program at the university, a member of Phi Kappa Tau’s Beta Omicron chapter, and a contributor to the Terps Racing Electric Vehicle Team. Through QUEST, Jacob has provided various consulting services to clients, including the University of Maryland itself. Furthermore, he has provided design work for Terps Racing focusing on powertrain components such as brake rotors, pedal systems, and brake lines.

Matilde Correia, Social Media Analytics Intern 

Matilde is a rising senior at the University of UC Berkeley in California majoring in Cognitive Science and minoring in Global Health. Cognitive Science has allowed her to pursue coding, mathematics, data science, linguistics, and psychology. Throughout college, she has interned for UL under Health and Life Sciences, worked in a research lab, was VP of finance for her sorority, and taught algorithm-based courses to later write a case study about it. Matilde is originally from Portugal and has lived in several different countries including Belgium, Germany, Japan, and now the United States. Outside of school, Matilde loves good food, spending time with her family, friends and her dog.
