Firefighters Reinforce ‘Close Before You Doze’ After Whidbey Island House Fire

November 5, 2025

A Central Whidbey Island family escaped safely after a house fire destroyed their home, underscoring the lifesaving importance of closing bedroom doors at night.

Firefighters found that a room with a closed door remained largely undamaged, demonstrating how even thin interior doors can slow fire spread and toxic smoke.

The incident reinforces the Fire Safety Research Institute’s “Close Before You Doze” campaign, which shows that closed doors can keep room temperatures below 100°F during a fire—compared to over 1,000°F in rooms with open doors.

Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue urges everyone to make this simple safety habit part of their nightly routine.
