Wildland urban interface (WUI) fires are complex fires that require both wildland and structural firefighting resources.

New Wildland Urban Interface Course on the Fire Safety Academy

September 23, 2025

The new online course, Structure Triage Considerations for Wildland Urban Interface Firefighting, is available for free through the Fire Safety Academy. This course, developed by UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute, addresses a critical gap in firefighter training: wildland firefighting education often focuses on fire behavior in remote areas, and structural firefighting training only briefly touches on vegetation fires, but wildland urban interface (WUI) fires are both. The course is based on the best available research, from both ULRI and other experts in the field, and brings in lessons learned from real incidents, including findings from ULRI’s Maui Wildfires Analysis.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Conducting structure triage in dynamic WUI environments
  • Understanding community layout and infrastructure vulnerabilities
  • Making informed decisions under rapidly evolving fire conditions
  • Enhancing coordination between agencies and disciplines

As wildfires become more frequent and destructive, it is critical that firefighters are able to assess which structures are defensible, which pose undue risks to crews, and how to allocate limited resources effectively under extreme conditions. Take this course to prepare yourself and your department for WUI fires.
