Fire departments worldwide continue to experience an increase of fire incidents involving lithium-ion batteries. The fire service recognizes how important it is to understand the hazards these batteries pose and how to mitigate the risks.

On March 30, 2023, UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) and the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department (DCFEMS) co-hosted the Lithium-Ion Battery Symposium: Challenges for the Fire Service. During the program, experts in fire safety research and fire safety operations shared leading edge knowledge about lithium-ion battery technology, the associated hazards, and how to mitigate the risks associated with battery fire incidents.

Featured speakers include members of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association, FSRI, and other UL Research Institutes researchers.

For those who could not attend the live event, FSRI developed a resource library featuring all presentation videos and other lithium-ion battery resources shared during the symposium.
