With only three minutes or less to escape a home fire, UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) understands the early warning that smoke alarms can provide and the vital role they play in saving lives from fire. FSRI collaborates with UL Standards, industry experts, and public fire and life safety educators to provide messaging around the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. Smoke Alarm Friendship Stories highlight the importance of maintaining smoke alarms like a good friendship as well as the reduction of nuisance alarms due to new performance requirements coming into effect for devices certified to the 8th edition of UL 217.
