FSRI Vice President and Research Engineer Recognized with the Alice Hamilton Award

The Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), part of UL Research Institutes Vice President and Executive Director, Steve Kerber and Research Engineer, Gavin Horn are the recipients of the 2023 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Science and Service Award - Alice Hamilton Award for Occupational Safety and Health under the category Exposure and Risk Assessment. This award recognizes individuals who demonstrate excellence in NIOSH technical and instructional materials. The awarded collaborative research article is titled Firefighters’ urinary concentrations of VOC metabolites after controlled-residential and training fire responses.

In his role at FSRI, Steve leads a fire safety research team that researches and addresses the unresolved fire safety risks and emerging dangers to reduce injury, loss and death from fire. In addition to his role at FSRI, Steve is also an Honorary Battalion Chief at the New York City Fire Department. Steve holds a Bachelor's and Master’s degree in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland (UMD) and completed his doctorate at Lund University in Sweden.

Gavin's role at FSRI as a Research Engineer includes first responder technology development, materials testing and nondestructive evaluation. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal manuscripts and given presentations all around the world. Gavin holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as a Master's degree in fire protection engineering from UMD.
