FSRI Senior Director of Research Dan Madrzykowski Recognized as Distinguished Alumnus by University of Maryland Department of Fire Protection Engineering

Dan Madrzykowski, senior director of research at the Fire Safety and Research Institute (FSRI), part of UL Research Institutes, is recognized as a 2024 Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE). The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes UMD alumni who have made significant achievements in the fire safety field and contributions to the mission and ideals of the FPE department. Dan was recognized for his pioneering work in applying fire dynamics to fire fighting practices. 

Dan has a doctorate in fire engineering from the University of Canterbury and a master of science in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland. Over a career spanning more than 35 years, Dan has co-authored over 85 technical reports, handbook chapters, book chapters, and delivered presentations at major conferences in the United States and abroad.

Dan is widely respected in fire and emergency services for his contributions to research in the field of fire protection. He has previously been recognized with the distinguished Dr. John Granito Award for Excellence in Fire Leadership in 2012, the President’s Award from the International Association of Fire Chiefs in 2014, and the Mason Langford Fire Service Leadership Award from the Congressional Fire Services Institute in 2023.
