FSRI Senior Director of Research awarded the Everett E. Hudiburg Award

Dan Madrzykowski, Senior Director of Research at the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), part of UL Research Institutes, is the recipient of the 2023 Everett E. Hudiburg Award by the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) during the 90th IFSTA Summer Validation Conference on July 8, 2023. This award is considered the highest honor IFSTA can bestow on a recipient and is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of firefighter training.

“Madrzykowski is an icon in the American fire service,” said Dr. Bob England, International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management founding editor.

Dan is currently serving on IFSTA's Executive Board and is a member of the National Fire Protection Association where he serves on the committees for Fire Service Training, Structural Fire Fighting, and Fire Investigation. He is a member of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and was a course developer for Understanding and Fighting Basement Fires. Dan has collaborated with the National Fire Academy, International Association of Arson Investigators, and International Association of Fire Chiefs in the development of several online training programs.

“Dan epitomizes what it means to get the ‘science to the streets’ to advance the fire service,” said Steve Kerber, FSRI vice president and executive director.

Dan ​​has more than 35 years of experience working to improve fire safety by conducting research and development in the areas of fire dynamics, fire test methods, fire control, and fire investigation. He has co-authored over 85 technical reports, handbook chapters, and book chapters, and has delivered presentations at major conferences in the United States and abroad. Dan holds a doctorate in fire engineering from the University of Canterbury as well as a Master of Science in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland. Dan has recently published a Research Report titled Analysis of A Near Miss in a Garden Apartment Fire - Georgia 2022, which was co-authored with Jason Floyd, Research Engineer at FSRI and is currently working on several near miss studies and the impact of HVAC systems of fire growth and pattern development.
