Child Survives Indy Apartment Fire due to 'Closed Door' Fire Safety Tip

July 16, 2025

'A 5-year-old boy survived an apartment fire in Indianapolis on July 12, thanks to a closed bedroom door and the swift response of firefighters. The blaze broke out around 8 a.m. on Barbary Lane, prompting a 32-year-old woman to flee the smoke-filled apartment and call 911 after being unable to reach her son. Firefighters found the child asleep in a smoke-free room, protected by the closed door, and safely rescued him. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire safety experts emphasize the life-saving importance of closed doors during fires. Research shows that closed doors can keep room temperatures below 100°F, compared to over 1,000°F in rooms with open doors, and significantly reduce toxic smoke exposure. Authorities also urge families to maintain working smoke alarms and have a fire escape plan.'
